Existential Therapy

Who is Existential Therapy for?

Existential Therapy can help people with psychological difficulties including Anxiety, Sexual Problems and Suicidal Ideation.  Existential Therapy can also assist people with Chronic or Terminal Illness as well as victims of Abuse.

How Does Existential Therapy Work?

Existential Therapy is a Humanistic Therapy which focuses on the philosophical doctrine of existentialism.  In practice the therapist supports the patient to make sense of life whilst promoting the existentialist belief that life has no essential or predetermined meaning and the individual is entirely free and ultimately responsible, so meaning has to be found or created.  The therapist supports the patient to live more authentically and purposefully whilst accepting the limitations of being human and focusing on the “here and now”.

“I cannot comment positively enough on the psychologist I saw at The British CBT & Counselling Service. She provided a structured yet flexible framework for discussing my issues, was insightful and at times necessarily firm and challenging which was exactly the sort of counsellor I had hoped to be paired with”.

Rebecca, Clapham

What the Research into Existential Therapy Says

Systematic corroborative evidence for Existential Therapy is relatively limited.  Some research into sexual problems notes the use of Existential Therapy as effective in assisting people with sexual problems working to accept their own sex and sexuality.  Additionally, research into the use of Gestalt and Existential therapy for those who are experiencing difficulties with mortality has shown a benefit from an existential approach that addresses an individual’s mind/body experiences in relation to chronic illness.
