Counselling for Paranoia

Paranoia is a condition whereby a person thinks and feels as though they are under threat even though there is no (or very little) evidence that they are. Paranoid thoughts can also be described as delusions. Being constantly suspicious and distrustful of others can have a seriously detrimental impact on your life, relationships and ability to meet your commitment and responsibilities. Paranoid thoughts can be anything from very mild to very severe and these experiences can be quite different. Paranoid thoughts can be a symptom of other mental health conditions.

Who Can Counselling for Paranoia Help?


Do you believe that everyone is out to get you?   Do you never trust others, even friends or family?  Are you constantly suspicious of people and assume that they have an agenda to hurt, harm or deceive?  Do you attribute negative meaning to what other people say, interpreting things as hostile or belittling when others see it as harmless or even friendly?  Are you often secretive because you believe what you say will be used against you?

What Does Treatment for Paranoia Involve?

Step 1

In your first therapy session you will meet with one of our Therapists to discuss your symptoms and how your paranoid thoughts impact on you and your relationships. Your Therapist will also ask you about other aspects of your life, background and what you would like to get out of your counselling. They will use this information to support you through a therapy programme that will help you to resolve the problems that you are struggling with and achieve your identified goals.

Step 2

Your Therapist will then help you to understand why you have paranoid thoughts,  how they developed and why you are unable to detach yourself from the paranoia. They will also look with you at how certain thoughts and behaviours maintain and even exacerbate the problem.

Step 3

Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), you and your Therapist will develop thoughts and behaviours that will reduce your paranoia and build your confidence in others enough to allow you to begin to trust them.

Step 4

In conjunction with step 3 you will also be taught techniques to improve your self-esteem and confidence which will improve your ability to adopt new thinking and behavioural patterns and also protect you against future relapse.
