Life is full of ebbs and flows for all of us. It throws many challenges at us and it can be really hard making a sense of impact that these have on ourselves and our relationships with other people and the world. We all experience times when we might feel lost, stuck, struggle with who are individually or in our relationships with others. Many of us are faced with painful life experiences that are difficult to accept and overcome. Talking therapy can provide a compassionate place to share and reflect on the things that have hurt us, or that we find difficult to accept, and to think together about the things that can nurture us, find solutions to the challenges we face and provide new opportunities during difficult times.
I am an experienced and enthusiastic Clinical Psychologist with experience of working with a diverse range of people. I have over 10 years of experience working in the NHS with children and young people and adults including those that are homeless. I have trained in a wide variety of therapeutic models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Systemic and solution focused therapy.
My approach to therapy is to take time to create a safe and open relationship and to hear your story. From here we can come to a shared understanding about the things you are finding challenging now, and identify how you would like things to be different, how you can move towards creating a life in line with the things you value, and nurture relationships with those that are important to you. Exploring thoughts and feelings, and how to accept them, and the way that they impact on your life is a key part of the work, as is identifying patterns in your life and relationships that are painful or prevent you from living a life in line with your values.
Having worked with people from such different walks of life I have a passion for listening to people’s stories and the range of feelings that come with the ebbs and flows of life. I realise that opening up in such a way can be a scary experience, and that being in a position where people can share their story is a privilege. With that I endeavour to treat the people I encounter with kindness, respect and honesty, so that we can think together about how to accept the things that can’t be changed, and work towards building a life and relationships that are both nurturing and valued.
I love the outdoors. When I’m not at work I spend time walking my lovely (but very cheeky) Labrador and golden retriever. I am also learning to garden. This summer I’ve had mixed results, a huge number of courgettes and tomatoes, but I’ve yet to succeed in growing a single carrot. It’s a work in progress. What I have managed to grow usually ends up in some sort of veggie dish which my friends tell me are delicious – I’m convinced they’re being polite.
