Stress at work

The work place is one of the most common places to experience high levels of stress and anxiety. It is unclear why this is exactly but it is likely to be a combination of the fact that our quality of life is largely dependent upon our financial security and much of our waking lives are spend in the work place so creating a lot of opportunities for us to feel anxious and stressed.

Stress at work can occur as a result of high and/or unrealistic goals or expectations set either by us or our superiors, challenging interpersonal relationships with colleagues and uncertainty regarding job stability and security. These scenarios results in elevated levels of stress, anxiety and panic when an individual is unable to set appropriate boundaries for themselves and others (e.g. saying ‘yes’ to everything task), lacks the confidence to create an environment that meets their needs and results in them being treated well, struggles to tolerate more than negligible levels of anxiety and stress and feels quickly overwhelmed.

Although a real and distressing problem stress when experienced in the workplace can be resolved relatively quickly and easily. A course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is usually the recommended treatment, as it is a counselling technique that both enables the individual to resolve their symptoms and address the factors that have made them vulnerable to experience stress at work in the first place.
