Philosophy

Many of us will feel challenged at times, perhaps confused by our thoughts, or disorientated by experiencing difficult emotions or relationship issues and life transitions. Something difficult to cope with may have happened in our life which may lead us to feel uneasy, experience suffering and make us feel as if there is something wrong with us.

Nonetheless, I firmly believe that all humans are equipped with the potential to live meaningful and satisfying lives, and that psychological problems arise as the normal response to difficult life circumstances. These sometimes may have taken place a long time ago. It is thus normal to feel anxious, low or experience relationship problems, as these are ways in which our mind and body attempt to adapt to life challenges.

Allowing oneself the opportunity to look at, and understand one’s issues, with the help and empathy of a therapist, may be the courageous step which enables us to change direction and unlock that potential to live a purposeful and satisfying existence, which once appeared stunted.

Approach

As a Counselling Psychologist, I use an integrative way of practicing, built around a strong cognitive-behavioral (CBT) core. Through years of experience, including within the NHS, I have gained the ability to draw upon various models, such as Schema Therapy (SFT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, and Person-Centered Therapy (PCT). I also draw from psychodynamic principles in order to gain a greater understanding of my clients’ difficulties, paying particular attention to the transference and countertransference within the therapeutic process.

I feel that my rich and diversified experience helps me select the most appropriate tools to respond to my client’s unique subjective needs, ultimately fostering empowerment in the client so that they can properly understand their issues, and crucially, take actions to move forward.

I practice therapy on both a short and long-term basis, depending on the clients’ needs and circumstances. Every decision in terms of therapy length, continuation and ending is taken collaboratively with my clients and will be informed from reviews that take place regularly. In general terms, I tend to focus initially on helping clients reduce the intensity, frequency, and impact of their symptoms and difficulties in their lives. Subsequently, the focus is moved towards learning ways to prevent future psychological struggle. This strategy is ultimately aimed at helping the client become equipped with the ability for stronger, and more successful living.

I offer help for a variety of psychological issues to individuals, couples and young people. I am comfortable working with issues concerning relationships, anxiety and panic, OCD, depression and personality disorders, among others. I can offer therapeutic help in both English and Italian.

Motivation

I believe I’m a sensitive and inquisitive individual, moved by a genuine curiosity for others and amazed by the uniqueness of every person’s subjective experience. This allows me to respect and value difference and diversity of opinions, cultures, and ethnicities, inside and outside therapy. I am pushed by a strong desire to help, contain and enable others to make changes that reflect their values and natural attitudes. To this extent, I always strive to provide an open, non-judgmental, warm and compassionate stance. Such a position allows the client to feel comfortable and at ease, and proves invaluable in setting the stage for a strong and effective therapeutic relationship, which I consider being a powerful platform, and engine for change; a training ground for a more satisfying and fulfilling existence.
