Philosophy

It is a part of being a human being that we can find ourselves facing a crisis or feeling distressed, confused or simply very stuck in some way or another.  When this happens and existing coping strategies fall short, the perspective, presence and support of another human being is invaluable.

It is not necessary to try to navigate difficulties alone.  Being listened to, heard and understood, I believe, are integral to emotional well-being, and developing self-trust and self-awareness.  Therapy is not just a process of dealing with problems or eliminating symptoms, it is also about developing greater fulfilment and satisfaction with life, and creating new possibilities.  It is about empowering you and helping you to help yourself.

Approach

I practise a collaborative therapy, which means we will work together to understand your specific circumstances, experiences and struggles.  My training and experience allows me to combine a range of approaches and this includes the core principles of CBT, whereby we will identify your self-talk and underlying thoughts and assumptions.  Recognising your day to day thinking processes and your (probably un-questioned) assumptions, will help us to understand how they may be influencing how you feel, how you behave and your perceptions of yourself and others.  We will look together to explore and recognise the issues and triggers that are involved in your distress.  I will encourage you to increase your self-understanding, expand your perspective and develop the awareness and tools necessary to create desired and lasting changes.  I will be guided by your individual goals and needs, and I will always listen with kindness and an open mind.

My career as a psychologist has included working within the NHS in both primary care and secondary care settings, and within HMP service   I have provided therapy to people presenting with a broad range of problems, including depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, phobias, PTSD and relationship issues.  I am experienced at working with substance addictions and process addictions.  I have worked with and supported clients suffering from the repercussions of abuse; sexual, emotional, verbal and physical.  I work across the life span, with families, couples and with children.

Motivation

The motivation to work in this field and the drive to change my career was born out of my belief that human beings can live their lives free from the influence and limitations that past experiences can create.  My commitment is to support people to live a full, happy and meaningful life.

About Me

I resumed my education as a mature part time student, and obtained my Bsc (Hons) Pyschology and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology while working full time and studying at weekends and evenings. I have lived overseas for fifteen years of my adult life, (USA and Middle East) and this exposed me to cultures that are very different to my own.  These experiences taught me a lot about the different ways that people live, and the importance of being non-judgemental.

I love being outdoors and regularly run, cycle and walk my dog.  I enjoy travel and I am now particularly interested to see more of the United Kingdom.
