At various points in our lives, we can find ourselves a little stuck, trapped, sometimes even fearful. At these times we often benefit from help to overcome the obstacles that are stopping us from becoming the best versions of ourselves that we can be. I’ve been a psychologist for over 20 years and during this time, I’ve dealt with the full spectrum of human distress and discomfort and firmly believe in the potential people have to change and grow.
Psychology provides many different ways of exploring issues that may seem ‘too big’ for people to handle alone. I am not wedded to any one theory or tool but on what seems to be the most beneficial for my patient, anything from CBT and ACT to Jungian thinking and third-wave therapies to get to the heart of problems. So, whether patients come to see me because of self-doubt or depression, child or relationship problems or mid-life crises, my approach will always be holistic, eclectic and individualised.
For as long as I can remember, people have shared with me things that they didn’t feel able to share with anyone else. So I guess I have always felt comfortable dealing with those parts of people that they are less keen to show to the world. There is always a way out of a tight corner, sometimes we need to work to find it but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Helping people to believe that things will change for the better and then supporting them to do what it takes to get there is central to what I try to do.
Being Mancunian born the only man guaranteed to make me laugh is fellow northerner, Peter Kay. I love food and have an unusual palate; my current favourite taste sensation is smoked aubergine ice-cream – recently discovered on a visit to Istanbul.
